glitched coffee table furniture design

So my plan changed from the footstool as I was having trouble making soft edges and rotating the pockets to face outwards rather than just up. so I changed gears and instead made a coffee table with randomly generated cubes to form the top of it. the legs and and cubes are fully adjustable with the design.

I was inspired to make it look like a glitch because its fun to blend the digital realm and reality together. It  would also make an interesting statement piece. Though maybe not for a house with children because of all the sharp corners.

Its not often that you see furniture trying to escape its own form. This statement coffee table could be found in any modern or Avant guard living room.

In reality I see this piece being made out of wood or molded plastic.

Here is a scale view

and the glitched coffee table by itself

Here it is in a plastic material

  1. Love the animation at the end! The concept is really cute, I love the little cubes that make up the overall table, it fits for both a sculptural piece and a functional table. Out of curiosity, are you building this block by block or 3D printing it as a whole shape?

    1. Thanks. I was thinking of 3D printing starting with the top on the bottom then building upwards toward the legs. I think I might have to use some structural supports for the spaces between the cubes but otherwise I think it'll be relatively easy to print.

  2. This is a very cool idea. it is not a coffee table that you set your cup on absentmindedly. I'm not sure if I like the wood material or the shiny plastic material more. They are both so different looking, but both look great.

  3. The glitch effect is really successful, and both colours remind me of Minecraft! Maybe the cubes could be sticking out of the legs to, that would make it even more glitchy. It's a great coffee table, and I can totally see it in a video game cafe.

  4. This table looks like something you would see in a gallery with how contemporary it looks, I think this piece would end up looking great in any different material.

  5. Very stylized and unique design! If you were looking to expand on a project like this it would make a pretty neat matching set. You could also do end tables, a T.V. stand and even a cabinet in this style. Would make a super cool render!

  6. Chloe, good job at creating a unique design! I found your animation helpful for displaying the parameters of your definition. I would love know more about how you plan on constructing this model. Might it be beneficial to incorporate dowels into your table definition to make the assembling process easier?

Looking forward to seeing more of your work :)

    1. Thanks. I think construction wise, if it was out of wood I would have partially separated cubes with peg joinery. Which I think I could put in my definition, though I'd have to think about it some more. but for the scale model I'm just gonna 3D print it.

  7. Really dope! The animation is sick and I think the table opens up to a super cool hierarchical design! I can see this used for games and really cool coaster placement. Great work! (Also I totally wanna see a black and white chess board table like this, that would be hella sick)

  8. I first saw this I thought it is really cute and cool design! I don't know why but I think it looks like a pet to me! Can't wait to see the model.

  11. This is so cute! love the animation! reminded me of Minecraft. I think it would be super cool if you build them like puzzles in reality (by making them removable and connectable) so people can build them based on personal preference! It would also be easier to carry around!

  12. This design is reminiscent of a Minecraft game. Several blocks are united and look like Lego. The shape is so cute that it will be useful as an interior accessory. If you make it in a mini size, it will go very well with the pot.

  13. I can totally see this being a really fun table, it'd be cool if each of the cube pieces were different colours and complimentary materials.

  14. Really interesting design for this! I look forward to seeing how it will print on the 3D printer, with this texture and the blocking. I would totally have this in my house and I agree with Jojo, I wonder what this would look like if each block were a different color?

  15. This is a really intriguing design. I love the concept but cant help but wonder how functional it would inevitably be without possibly a glass surface where you could rest items on. The render is wonderful and it think it would be a great centerpiece.
